The ecological, entertaining and practical “Nati per leggere” itinerant furnishings.

The “Nati per leggere” itinerant furnishings will be presented at Turin’s International Book Fair on Monday 17th May 2010 in the Bookstock Village, Pavilion 5 Lingotto at 6.30 pm.

The choice, naturally, was for an eco-sustainable, simple and easily handled material, and for creations that can be adapted to different situations and personalised environments. A4Adesign, a specialist in cardboard design, created the original and colourful  “Nati per leggere” itinerant  furnishings, an idea sponsored by the Basso Novarese library system and curated by Area Progetti for pre-school-age children and aimed at parents, libraries, paediatricians and schools. And, given the tender age of the users, it called for extra special attention in the creation of the single pieces of furniture.

Having already worked with schools, foundations and training and teaching institutes, A4Adesign devised and created  nomadic, whimsical, light yet solid pieces which can be easily assembled and taken apart by children.  A kit with the “Nati per Leggere” trademark consists of  tables and chairs for adults and children and pocket-poufs which can be placed as desired or put together to create amphitheatre or snaking shapes.  Then there are bookshelf modules, boxes for displaying and transporting books,  stage sets and decorations,  play houses,  trees and butterflies.  All in A4Adesign’s signature recycled and recyclable cardboard.

The creations respect entertainment and educational requirements and volumes are reduced for shipping and for simple and fast assembly.  All the materials come in flat-packs, cutting down on assembly times – they are interlocking becoming a fun game – and can be easily dismantled, stored and transported.

A4Adesign is at home with these materials as all its projects evoke a dreamlike and fantastic world, a children’s world.  And right from the beginning it has paid special attention to this world with innovative projects for children.  For examples the 2007 “Colore di carta”  exhibition in collaboration with the MUBA (Milan’s children’s museum) and the roving exhibition “Il mondo del libro”, an interactive itinerary created in 2005 with ABCITTÀ and the Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori Foundation.  Then there was the “Piazza d’asporto”, created for children at the 2005 Milan Film Festival, which is as fresh today as the day it was created.

CARATTERI MOBILI / an alphabet in 3 dimensions

“Caratteri Mobili” in Italian has two meanings: “moveable type” and “typeface furniture.”

The graphic project by Francesco Dondina, a playful reinterpretation of the alphabet in quasi 3-dimensional lettering that morphs into furniture, has been transposed into installations in an exhibition organized by Les Trois Ourses.

The transformation is the work of A4Adesign who have exported, via drawings and the realization of proto-types, the forms designed by Dondina from printed paper to cardboard. They are forms that become readable furniture, or rather letters that furnish daily scenes: tables, chairs, stools, bookshelves, coat-hooks, sofas built out of cut sheets of honeycomb cardboard.

A game, ironic lettering, a test of feasibility and ambivalence which springs from a project conceptualized and realized in 2008 by Francesco Dondina for the series Un Sedicesimo published by Edizioni Corraini of Mantua. It’s an alphabet in which every letter is also a piece of furniture. Originally conceived for children, it crosses over all barriers of genres and generations.

Organized by Les Trois Ourses on the occasion of Designer’s Day, a 6-day event in Paris dedicated to design, the exhibition will be up from June 9th to 14th in the suggestive environs of Docks en Seine, the ex-General Warehouses along the Seine and an integral part of the major development project called Paris Rive Gauche, destined to become a laboratory of creativity and a space of exchange and discovery.

Super Natural Cardboard – Macro fauna details create a new urban poetry.

A4Adesign’s outlandish solution for the Mauro Grifoni store at Fuorisalone 2010.

Macro cardboard sculptures change the perception of space, giant figures pass through walls and dividers, dropping down to invade the room. These oversize creations from A4Adesign enhance animal details which dominate the area’s clean-cut geometric lines, transmitting a sense of playful alienation and a new kind of poetry that forces you look at things and space, which is rich in traces of bygone times, from another angle.

The precise aesthetics of the store – 300 square metres on three levels overlooking an atmospheric patio – are the setting for A4Adesign’s scenographic projects which are surprisingly functional as display units for products of excellence.

The extreme use of cardboard shows just how far this supernatural, eco-sustainable and technological material can go when it comes to shape and significance. It is also ideal for macro volumes, lending itself to uses no other material can equal.
